Onyx’s Journey: How the Universe Led Our Rescue Dog Back to Us
Once upon a time, I entertained the idea of having a third child. If it were a girl, I always knew I’d name her Marley. But life had other plans. Truthfully, I had to prioritize my mental health and well-being so I could be the best version of myself for the two beautiful children I already had.
Fast forward a few years, and the idea of getting a dog started to feel more like a reality. I figured Marley would make an adorable name, boy or girl. But when we found our boy, Onyx, the name just didn’t fit. The kids absolutely loved the name Onyx, so that’s who he became.
Well… let me tell you. I have always been a big believer in the universe, and this experience only solidified that.
Recently, I came across a comment on a post on the Regina Humane Society Facebook page from a previous owner of Onyx. She was commenting about how she was heartbroken to see where he had ended up. Something told me to reach out to her, and when I did, she shared more with me about his past. And that’s when I learned something that completely floored me.
Believe it or not, Onyx used to be called Marley.
I know, right? WHAT. I could hardly believe it. It was one of those moments where you just know, this was meant to be.
I have no regrets about not having another child, but there has always been a space in my heart that aches for my dad. And somehow, Onyx has become a place to pour all that love—the love I desperately wanted to give. Helping him learn that he is worthy, safe, secure, and loved has been everything my heart truly needed.
The universe always finds a way to bring us what we need, even when we don’t realize we’re looking for it. Sometimes, it just takes a little time for the pieces to fall into place.
This is Onyx’s Story: His Journey to Finding us
Onyx was born on August 26, 2022. His dad was a huge white and brown lab, and his mom was a stray border collie mix found along the highway. The family who had them on their farm had seventeen dogs and no running water.
In November 2022, Onyx’s first mama met the litter, ten puppies in total and they originally planned to take just one home. But her daughters convinced her that they should take two, promising to find a home for the second puppy (now Onyx) through friends.
They named him Marley.
Weeks passed, and they still hadn’t found him a home. Eventually, they did connect with a couple online who was looking for a dog. They seemed like good people, and in mid-December, they took him in, saying they would keep his name, Marley.
Then, in August 2023, he appeared on a lost and found dog group. Marley still had the same original collar, but now it was attached to a leash that had been torn off. No one knows how long he had been on the streets, but he was thin and looked rough. Yet, despite everything, he was still the same sweet, loving boy. And when he saw his brother again? He definitely remembered him.
A man who had found Marley said he knew someone looking for a dog. This person had received a Medal of Honor in the city for saving a life, and he seemed like a decent guy. He was excited to bring Marley out to the lake with him and, once again, promised to keep his name.
But in December 2023, he appeared again on the lost and found dog page. A woman had found him wandering and brought him into the Regina Humane Society. He was reclaimed, but again around December 2024 he ended up at RHS again and nobody claimed him.
It also turns out that our boy, now known as Onyx, is only TWO!! We adopted him thinking he was around five. This poor soul had quite a tough go of it in his two short years of life - but you know what? I am grateful he found his way to us. He is exactly where he is meant to be and we are so happy to love him.
An extra added fun fact? Each adoption ‘suite’ at the Regina Humane Society is sponsored by an individual, family, or business. The suite that Onyx was in was sponsored by a group with the same last name as my partner.
I don’t know about you, but I 1000% believe that the universe has spoken.
Love always,
Jess & Onyx
